Alternative Medicine For ADHD – A Way Through The Jungle

2 08 2009

By: Robert William Locke

When we look at alternative medicine for ADHD, there is a startling variety and it is sometimes difficult to see the wood for the trees. We have a fantastic choice which ranges from Bach flower remedies, herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupuncture, meditation and behavior therapy. You could say it is anything which is not allopathic conventional medicine. For the purposes of this article, I want to concentrate on behavior therapy and homeopathy as they have given the most promising results in many trials with ADHD children and are gaining both popularity and respect as the best alternative medicine for ADHD available now.

There is a lot of debate and controversy on homeopathy. The medical establishment has long taken a hostile stand against homeopathy largely because it is using natural ingredients from plants and minerals which are diluted so much that it cannot have any effect on the human organism. ADHD children are often uncontrollable, inattentive or hyperactive or a combination of all three, depending which type of ADHD they have. The homeopathic ingredients found to be most effective for ADHD are Cina, Hyoscyamus Niger and Stramonium. In the clinical trials, they definitely restored balance and helped to alleviate the most serious symptoms.

But the medical establishment protests that nobody knows exactly how or why homeopathy works. The same argument could be used against their own psychostimulant drugs which act as stimulants on the neurotransmitters in a child’s brain. No long term studies have been done either. There is now widespread concern about the health risks associated with psychiatric drugs. So much so that thousands of parents are turning to alternative medicine for ADHD and homeopathy is the favourite, simply because there are no side effects or risks.

You can imagine the outcry when infants less than the age of one are being diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed these somewhat dangerous medications. Lots of prestigious medical bodies are now questioning the wholesale drugging of the nation’s children and as the tons of Ritalin, Cylert and Dexadrine are being consumed, there are fears about the health risks involved.

As will be obvious to any intelligent parent, the way a child behaves will not be cured by drugs. The ADHD child will have to grow into an adult very quickly and he is going to need time management and coping skills, not to mention ability to interact with peers and form long lasting relationships. No medication will teach him these skills. What will teach him to learn these skills is behaviour modification or ADHD behavior therapy which is now approved by more enlightened doctors and caregivers. It is through this type of intervention, with the parents and children as partners, that positive behaviour is reinforced while bad behaviour is discouraged.

Some medication is needed to alleviate ADHD symptoms and to keep the child calm and under control so that tantrums are reduced and bouncing off the walls is an exception rather than the rule. ADHD drugs are not the answer but a homeopathic remedy is. This combination of behavior therapy combined with a homeopathic treatment is by far the best alternative medicine for ADHD.

A Primer on Alternative Medicine

2 08 2009

By: Susan Patterson

Alternative Medicine has been gaining popularity in the west in recent years.  Frustrated with ineffective therapies or medications that cause severe side effects, many people have turned to other therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal medicine to heal whatever ails them.  Still others take herbal supplements as a preventative measure to guard against high cholesterol and heart disease.  While many of these therapies can be effective, some also offer false hope in curing conditions where traditional medicine is actually more effective.

Acupuncture is a centuries old Chinese therapy used to unblock the body’s energy along points called meridians.  The acupuncturist uses long, thin needles, sticking them in the skin in certain areas.  The theory to acupuncture is that the body contains energy which is also called chi.  When the chi is unable to flow freely, pain develops.  By unblocking these areas, the chi can again flow freely and the pain subsides.  Studies have shown positive results when using this therapy for nausea associated with pregnancy, chemotherapy and post surgery.  It is mostly used for pain.

Homeopathy is a form of medicine where it is believed that the substance that could cause the problem is what can cure you.  It is used for chronic illnesses like arthritis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome but not considered appropriate for serious diseases like cancer and heart disease.  These medicines are delivered via alcohol-based tinctures or sugar pellets placed under the tongue.  Many critics state that homeopathic medicines are too diluted to cure, but studies show a difference between these concoctions and placebos.  More research is needed to gauge their effectiveness.

Herbal medicine is the most popular alternative therapy today.  Formulas are created for nearly every condition under the sun and are widely available at pharmacies without a prescription.  They are especially popular in diet pills and for depression.  These are taken in supplement form and many times do not have the same side effects as medication.  Many consider these safer and less expensive alternatives to prescription drugs.  A good example of this is the natural appetite suppressant hoodia, which is thousands of times more effective than glucose in telling the brain the body is full, without the same side effects as harmful stimulants like caffeine or the now-banned ephedra.

Alternative Medicine – a History of Alternative Medicine

2 08 2009

By: Emma Allen

Alternative medicine is actually one of the oldest forms of health care, dating back centuries and in some cases millennia. Health care has traditionally focused on the health of the mind and the body, and the interaction of the two elements. As the nineteenth century waned, however, many traditional approaches to disease prevention and cures were discarded in favor of new theories of disease and treatment.

The turning point came in with the introduction of germ theory, and the discovery that microbes called germs were responsible for disease. There were two competing theories of how germs like bacteria, viruses and fungi caused disease. The first theory was that these microbes were universally infectious, and it was this theory that eventually won out and become the basis of modern western medicine.

The other theory, rooted in a long history of alternative medicine, held that while bacteria, viruses and fungi were infectious, they could only cause illness if the body were in a weakened state. Adherents to this theory felt that by keeping the body in top condition, disease could be avoided even in the presence of infectious agents.

The adoption of the germ theory, and the birth of modern medicine, has led to some amazing advances, and some cures for devastating diseases. However, it has also led to a marginalizing of the importance of alternative and naturalistic approaches to health care.

Fight Cancer With Alternative Medicine

2 08 2009

By: Cindy Browne

Alternative medicine combined with modern medicine may be what you need to effectively win against cancer. Even with all of the advances we have made in the area of modern science too many people die each year due to cancer. They are also affected by the treatments due to the harsh side effects. Many people experience hair loss, vomiting, and even dizziness after cancer treatments have been given.

There are types of alternative medicine that can help with the vomiting and the dizziness. Acupuncture involves various pressure points on the body being poked with small needles. The person administering the procedure knows where to insert them in order to offset the internal side effects from cancer treatment. There are certain essential oils such as peppermint that can help a person get relief from them as well.

Incorporating some types of alternative medicine can give you more to arm yourself with in the fight. Since this is a holistic approach it will help you fight cancer with both your mind and your body. Too many people don’t realize how important it is to have a good outlook when you are fighting cancer. It can be hard to be positive though when you find you are facing cancer.

Having a great support system in place is very important. That way you can talk about your fears, feelings of anger, and decide how best to handle the situation. You may find it helps to talk with friends and family members. Others turn to professionals as they don’t want to burden those close to them with the information. There are plenty of online support groups with individuals in the same situation where a person can get support as well.

Many individuals suffering from cancer find their energy levels are significantly zapped. That can make it hard to continue exercising each day. Yet your body needs it as a way to naturally boost your immune system. There are types of low impact exercise though that can be helpful. Yoga and Tai Chi are types of exercise that help you get the blood flowing properly, improve circulation, and help you to clear your mind. It can take some time to learn how to focus with them but as you practice you will get better at it.

Cancer is a very serious illness but one that you can overcome if you are physically and mentally willing to do so. There aren’t any side effects to these types of alternative medicine so they are only going to offer you benefits that will help you to get well. Simple changes such as drinking green tea will help to clear toxins from your body. This is important as you don’t want to have to fight other types of illnesses a the same time as the cancer.

You will find that medical professionals don’t readily embrace alternative medicine for cancer treatment. Therefore you will need to decide if you are willing to incorporate them into your own treatment procedure. You can be assured such measures won’t interfere with the effectiveness of your cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. You have nothing to lose but plenty to benefit from when you try them out.

Alternative Medicine Education in India

2 08 2009

By: Dev Sri

India is home to different alternative and complementary treatment streams. The main among them are Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Siddha, followed by Unani, Naturopathy, Yoga, etc. Before the advent of Allopathy into the land by British rulers, Ayurveda and Siddha were the only treatment options available. The suppression of natural cure methods for the sake of Allopathy has dwindled the importance of Ayurveda, Yoga and Siddha over time.

Now there is newfound revival for Ayurveda and other alternative medicines. The single most important reason why people turning away from Allopathy and towards Ayurveda is the fact that side effects so common with Allopathy and an almost total absense of side effects with Ayurveda medicines.

Now Government has recognized courses for all types of alternative medicines. Ayurveda medical colleges under direct government control are the main centers of ayurveda education in India. Ayurveda medical colleges and research centers in private sector are relatively new to Indian medical scenario.

Employment Opportunities in Alternative Medicine

With surge in demand for Ayurveda and other medical sciences by people of India and from around the world, persons educated in alternative medicines today have worldwide opportunities. Training centers, treatment centers, hospitals, resorts with Ayurvedic treatment facilities etc are main places where they can try employment.

Independent trainers and recognized doctors also have lot of scope in Ayurveda research, development and treatment industries.

Different Ayurveda Universities work from India. A common resource center to get information on all systems of medicines in India is at http://www.IndiaMedicine.nic.in/.

Alternative Medicine Vs. Conventional Medicine

2 08 2009

By: Gary Kenneth Archer

Conventional Medicine:

Our current medical “industry” subscribes to us getting a disease, becoming sick, going to a doctor, getting Diagnosed, taking our prescribed medication and if deemed necessary have an operation. Conventional treatments of a disease are simply a Band-Aid. We as a society have bought hook line and sinker into conventional wisdom that a medical doctor is the last word, they know what is best for us, and they are concerned about our best interest. There are doctors who are genuinely involved in your best interest but they are few. Prescription drugs are made man poisons that habitually addict us to there use. Furthermore, prescription drugs prevent our bodies from functioning properly. Side effects from pharmaceutical drugs are devastating, debilitating, and sometimes deadly. Approximately 180,000 Americans die {killed} in hospitals every year by some doctors. Many of these deaths happen because drugs were prescribed because a lack of understanding of specific patient needs. They were killed because it is so easy and personally lucrative for doctors to prescribe, prescribe, and prescribe!

Alternative Medicine:

Alternative medicine is nothing new in fact it is as old as mankind. In fact it originated with our very existence on this earth. That’s right God gave us all we need to be healthy in all earth’s resources and in our very own immune system in our gloriously designed bodies. In some cultures alternative medicine is not only practiced but also deeply imbedded in generations of respectability. Western medicine reacts with much disdain against the use of “natural methods” to improve and sustain good health. Furthermore there is an exhorted effort by “big drugs” to shut the door on the natural supplement industry. With that said alternative medicine is now growing in popularity thanks to many bold natural nutritionists, holistic practitioners and the like. People are being educated through the web and by authors who are speaking out loud and clear. It has become clear that living a vibrant healthy lifestyle with good nutritious food, clean water, plenty of sunshine, and pure natural supplements will go a long way in keeping you healthy for a long time. If you get sick get more then one diagnosis and seek all natural supplements to heal your body.

In Conclusion:

Conventional medicine certainly has its place in our society and without it we would be for the worse, but it is not there to cure any disease. Trust in your body to cure itself given the necessary ingredients. Build up your immune system so you won’t get sick. Concentrate on staying healthy. Think intelligently before taking ANY made man drug, think about what you’re putting into your body. Don’t let some self-serving doctor decide what is best for you, your better, then that. Lastly, indulge yourself in nutritious foods and find a reputable natural supplement company and begin a program that will ensure that your body {immune system} is working optimally.

Weight Loss with Alternative Medicine

2 08 2009

By: Hans Hasselfors

Weight loss is one of the big topics-no pun intended-on the late night television circuit. While flipping through the channels after 11p.m., you are apt to come across several advertisements for weight loss pills and diet supplements, each promising to help you drop those unwanted pounds and remove stubborn belly fat once and for all.

Let’s face it, if these pills really worked, America wouldn’t be the top overweight country in the world.

There are types of alternative medicine which can help with weight loss, however, and with great results. While no alternative medicine is a magic solution, practicing these principles can help you become more limber, feel more energetic, and the end result-or side effect if you will- is weight loss.

Take yoga for example. The low impact stretching involved with yoga will help you feel less stressed, and as a result less likely to over eat as a result of depression or anger. Acupuncture has exact pressure points in the ear which help reduce cravings, and detoxifying teas and herbs can help you feel healthier, and the side effect would be thinking twice before deciding that you want to “pollute” yourself again with oily and fatty foods. In this respect, alternative medicine is wonderful for weight loss.

Most alternative medicines for weight loss come in the form of detoxifying teas, energy supplements, and vitamins. The exercise and diet plans are the basis-as they should be- for safe and effective long term weight loss. There is no magic potion to lose weight. Truly dropping pounds and keeping them off requires regular daily exercise and a change in eating habits, period.

However, to get you ready for weight loss, here are some alternative medicine detoxifying teas and interesting supplements;

Take turmeric, ginger, and lemon-about a half teaspoon each and the juice of half a lemon, and boil it all in 2 cups of water. Drink every morning as a detoxifier before you start your diet.

All diets should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, and buying a juicer is a great way to make a habit out of eating healthy. Please see your doctor before starting any kind of diet plan.

Omega three is a fine source of nutrient, and can be added to any smoothie or juice that you’re drinking.

Visit your local food co op or herbalist, they can get you set up with all sorts of alternative teas and nutrition advice, and can refer you to a good homeopathic doctor who will evaluate you as to what your individual nutrition needs are. Bovine and shark cartilage are two dietary supplements to hit the alternative market. Both have been used for years outside of the United States and Britain, but now are big business in the health food stores.

The most popular form of alternative medicine for weight loss isn’t really medicine at all, rather behavior modification through hypnosis. Hypnosis doesn’t make you rely on will power, that’s one of the reasons it’s so popular.

How hypnosis works is that it investigates what is subconsciously holding you to the thinking and eating habits that keep you overweight. Hypnotists believe that if the root cause of the obesity can be alleviated, the patient will naturally begin to lose weight. It is actually a very effective form of alternative medicine, and overall can cost much less than trips to day spas and expensive over the counter weight loss pills. Through hypnosis you can let go of fears that keep you from eating healthy, and begin to allow a positive energy flow through you, causing you to want to stick to the new way of eating and exercising.

Alternative Medicine For Dogs: Types Of Medicine Therapies For Canines

2 08 2009

By: Trevor Price

Alternative medicine for dogs is quickly gaining in popularity as more pet owners seek natural ways to treat their pets without depending on pharmaceutical therapies. Instead of relying on drugs, pet lovers are focusing on the whole animal.

To learn more about different types of natural medicine and treatments for canines, read on.

Osteopathy and Chiropractic Care

Studies show that manipulations of the body and bone structure based upon a firm understanding of anatomy are effective for limiting human back pain, joint pain and spinal column discomfort. In 1996, the American Veterinary Medical Association reported “sufficient clinical and anecdotal evidence exists to indicate that veterinary chiropractic can be beneficial.”

While virtually no research has been carried out on the value of osteopathy for dogs, anecdotal evidence suggests the treatments are effective and especially helpful during recovery after an injury or accident.

Acupuncture Needles

Acupuncture serves as an alternative “medicine” for dogs and is typically used as an effective painkiller. Painkilling drugs work by mimicking the brain’s pain-killing chemicals like endorphins. Acupuncture, instead, stimulates the release of natural endorphins.

Remember that acupuncture for dogs should only be performed by a veterinary acupuncturist and should not be done by an acupuncturist who only works on people. It is a medical procedure and should be treated as such. Instead, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation in your area.

Herbal Therapies

Most pharmaceutical drugs come from herbs and plants, but they isolate a particular chemical or component of the plant. In herbal medicine, the whole plant is used rather than only a single part. Also, many herbal remedies are seen as a complimentary program with each herb prescribed to a variety of ailments.

While many veterinarians understand herbal remedies and will accept that various treatments have a medicinal value, they are also hesitant to prescribe or recommend herbal therapies. This is because toxic doses of herbs are largely unknown for dogs. So, before you undertake an herbal medicine program with your dog, do your research carefully.

Relaxation and Massage

Relaxation is a critical part of good health – improving our breathing, anxiety, muscle pain and stress. The same holds true for dogs, and many veterinarians will actually prescribe massage and relaxation as treatment for pain, anxiety, stress or sleeping problems.

Homeopathy

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association – “clinical and anecdotal evidence exists to indicate that veterinary homeopathy may be beneficial.” And though no high-caliber studies of homeopathic medicines have been carried out on dogs, it’s a treatment course that’s increasing in popularity.

More and more veterinarians are beginning to prescribe alternative medicine for dogs, from touch therapy treatments to herbal remedies. So, ask your vet about natural therapies during your next visit as a health option for your pet.

During your research, though, be aware that there is still a lot of general medical community skepticism – both for people and pets – concerning alternative medications. Consequently, you will need to be vigilant in your fact-gathering investigation to ensure you are neither duped by a scam nor dissuaded from persuing legitimate health options for your pet.

Alternative Medicine Can Offer You Benefits Without Side Effects

2 08 2009

By: Cindy Browne

There are many different types of medications out there that doctors prescribe for relief. It can be a long process working with your doctor to find the one that works well for you. Prescription medications fall into many categories so if one doesn’t work well for you they will likely prescribe you something else to try. The dose of it to take may need to be tweaked as well.

It seems like the cost involved with prescription medications continues to increase all the time. Even if you have health insurance you may discover many of these medications aren’t covered. You may have a co-pay that you need to give out of pocket each time you go in to have the prescription filled up again. The other major concern is the side effects.

When you pick up a prescription medication you will be given a list of the possible side effects. Some of the most common ones include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, and the inability to sleep. The way in which a particular medication affects you will depend on many factors. The severity of the side effects will also vary. You may suffer from them for only the first few days or continually while taking that medication.

This can pose some serious problems though so many people are turning to alternative medicine. When you are taking medication to get relief from a medical concern the last thing you want is side effects to make you feel worse. It is unrealistic too that you can function normally with them. It is almost impossible to work all day when you feel sick or you have diarrhea.

Since there are natural remedies out there that fall into the category of alternative medicine you can get results. However, you get those results without the side effects. That means you can get back to feeling good again. You can go on about your life and not have to worry about it. This is even more important if you are suffering from a problem that you will need ongoing treatment for.

Why does the medical community withhold information about alternative medicine? There are quite a few theories about this. First, they do make quite a bit of money off of the pharmaceutical companies for recommending certain medications. Second, they don’t want their patients to get into the habit of self medicating.

However, if you do still see your doctor on a regular basis then tell them you are looking at alternative medicine. You have ever right to refuse to use prescription medications so that you can save money and avoid the side effects. Take the time to do your own research so you can evaluate various types of alternative medication that could replace those prescriptions for you.

The process can be one of trial and error as there are quite a few different types of alternative medicine for the same medical concern. Try one to see what type of results you get. If it isn’t what you were after then try something else. Even if you haven’t had much success with prescription medications you just may find a form of alternative medicine that works wonders.
